Natural history, ecology and human environment of the Himalayas

Mulpani Botanical Garden, Kapurkot, Salyan

Mulpani botanical garden (2000m) is established in 1990 and covers an area 5.5 ha. The main objectives of the Mulpani Botanical Garden are:

  • To provide information for visitors about plants, gardening and ecology through display, education, and conservation
  • To design a landscape garden of trees, shrubs and perennials that complement the existing land and enhances the sites topography to create a setting that is beautiful and attractive to all the senses
  • To preserve and enhance the existing features of the site while designing and planting gardens that complement the natural character of the park

The activities carried out in the garden are:

  • Development of landscapes of different garden types (Rock garden, Orchid garden, Medicinal plants garden, Seasonal flower garden etc.)
  • Conservation of plant diversity of similar types of species found in this bio- climatic condition. The prominent tree species conserved are Bombax ceiba, Cedrus deodara, Cinnamomum camphora, Cinnamomum glaucescens, Elaeocarpus sphaericus, Terminalia bellirica, Terminalia chebula etc. Similarly noteworthy shrubs include Bauhinia purpurea, Bauhinia vahlii, Zanthoxylum armatum etc. This is the highly suitable place for the Orchids conservation. Some  CITES listed plants  like Cycas pectinata , Rauvolfia serpentina, Taxus wallichiana and various species of Orchids are also conserved in this garden.
  • More than 30 orchids species are conserved in this garden. Some economic and medicinal plants like Amomum subulatum, Asparagus racemosus, Daphne bholua, Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, Rauwolfia serpentine, Swertia chiraita, Valeriana jatamansi, Zingiber officinale, Aloe vera, etc. are also cultivated successfully.
